Michigan Area Agencies on Aging: find yours by county
Sixteen agencies cover all 83 Michigan counties. Look up yours, see what they may help with, and how it fits alongside Home Help.
The short answerMichigan has 16 Area Agencies on Aging, and together they cover all 83 counties. Most counties belong to one region. Wayne County is split between two agencies, so check which side of the line your address is on. Find your county in the list below, then call to ask what that agency can help with. Home Help itself is requested through your county MDHHS office.
What an Area Agency on Aging is
Area Agencies on Aging were created by the federal Older Americans Act. The Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan describes them as "a one-stop shop with expertise on aging and long-term care." In Michigan, most are private nonprofits, and each one covers a region of one or more counties.
According to the association, these agencies help older adults, younger people with disabilities and caregivers who are looking for information and resources. For an adult child who has just realized Mom needs more help, that is a good first phone call, because you do not have to know the right question yet.
What they may be able to help with
The association's fact sheet says Area Agencies on Aging offer counseling on Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance through the Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP). They also offer supports coordination, a service the association says helps frail older adults stay independent. They fund home and community services through a network of providers, and they can help people move home from a nursing home or hospital.
The services the association lists include:
- Caregiver training and respite care
- Home-delivered and congregate meals
- Chore and homemaker help
- Personal care
- Transportation
- Legal assistance
- Housing assistance
- Elder abuse prevention
- The MI Choice Medicaid Waiver
Services may include these, and they vary by region. Ask your agency what it offers in your county and what you would need to do to be considered.
How this fits with Home Help
Home Help is a separate State program. It is requested through your local MDHHS county office, and a State caseworker decides what is approved. An Area Agency on Aging does not make that decision. What an agency can do is help you understand the options around it, such as information about other services that may help. Our guide to finding your county MDHHS office covers the Home Help side, and MI Choice Waiver or Home Help? explains how the two programs differ.

If you live in Wayne County
Wayne County is the one county split between two agencies. The Detroit Area Agency on Aging (Region 1-A) serves the City of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and Highland Park. The Senior Alliance (Region 1-C) serves the rest of the county. If you are not sure which side of the line your parent's address falls on, call either agency and ask. They can tell you which one is yours.
Before you call
- Have your parent's county and city ready.
- Say what is going on in your own words, for example "my mother needs help getting in and out of the bathtub, and I am her only family nearby."
- Ask what services the agency offers in your county, and whether there is a waiting list.
- Ask who to talk to about Medicaid, since that question is often separate.
- Write down the name of the person you spoke with and the date.
This is general information, not legal, medical or benefits advice. Already Caring is a private company. We are not an Area Agency on Aging and we are not affiliated with any of the agencies listed, with the State or with any government program. Listing an agency here is not an endorsement. Services, phone numbers and websites change, so confirm with the agency directly.
